Custer County has an intriguing history filled with interesting characters, mining wars, triumph and tragedy. Little remains of the hastily built mining camps, but a wealth of information is available at both the Silver Cliff and Westcliffe Museums. The original Silver Cliff Town Hall and Fire Station is listed on the State Historic Register and houses the Silver Cliff Museum at 606 Main Street.

The Old "Westcliff" School, one of the original twenty-four one room schoolhouses, is on the National Historic Register and is home to the Westcliffe Museum at 403 South Fourth Street. Both are well worth visiting during your stay in Custer County.

Some of the displays you will see include a Google Earth Lan Sat collage of the old Texas Creek / Westcliffe branch of the D&RGRR that came into this valley in the early 1900's, a Timeline of Custer County History and it's relationship to the railroads, a working section car or speeder used by the section crew to maintain the rails, bridges and roadbed of this Westcliffe spur, and much more.
